First Night

January 1, 2010 at 6:18 PM (dear step daughters, health, just for fun)

First Night is a family oriented New Years celebration downtown. It’s one of the reasons I chose to work today. It’s mostly outside and they had industrial sized heaters, generators and light towers. Well, you know what that means, right. Sk8er Boi had to pick all that stuff up at 12:30. They told him to be there at 11:00 even though he knew they wouldn’t let him touch any of it until after midnight.

Anyway, B wanted to ride with him so they took the opportunity to join the celebration. B took a few pics. Unfortunately, her phone doesn’t do well in low light so… (clickable, as usual)

The Stilts Guy

These are New Years resolutions written on Post-Its

OK, this guy was just weird, running around dancing and gyrating, freaking teen girls out (he apparently chased two of them–all in fun) and generally acting a fool

I was worried about B not having a good New Years but it sounds like she had fun.

I, OTOH, was in bed by 9:30. If @$$hat neighbor made a lot of noise, I didn’t even hear it.

LDN:
Have I told you I love my doc? As mentioned, she was happy to give me the LDN. Had I little…a-hem…problem with the pharmacy. Dr.Z wrote the Rx for 25mg (she found it in that dose in her computer) but when I got to the pharmacy, they hadn’t filled it because “it only comes in 50mg–we looked it up!” This chick was so snarky, I wanted to slap her!!!

Anyway, I came home and PM’ed TessieAnn to find out how she gets 4.5mg out of a 50mg tablet. She kindly wrote back that one can mix it with 50ml of water and just drink 4.5ml of the mix each night. Cool, I leave a message for Dr. Z that I can do the 50mg tabs.

In the afternoon the next day, as I am about to leave to get my Rx from Snarky-Face Pharmacy, Dr. Z calls me. Yes, my doc made the phone call herself. And she had taken the time to do some research and found a pharmacy in town that specializes in making small dose capsules out of large dose tablets!!! And, my insurance covered both the capsules and their services for only the price of a generic Rx!!!

I took my first dose last night. I slept from 9:30 to 11:30 when nature called. Went right back to sleep. Woke sometime in the middle of the night and found myself 3/4 of the way onto Sk8er Boi’s side of the bed, moved back and slept until 3:30. I couldn’t go back to sleep after that, probably because I expected Sk8er Boi and B to come in the door at anytime which would wake me anyway. I was right too, the got back about 3:50. I just got up, I get up for work at 4:30 anyway.

I didn’t have any dreams that I remember. One of the side affects is supposed to be vivid dreams but I have those a lot anyway….

Work:
having major drama (none of it mine) but I’ll save that for tomorrow. Must go make something for dinner.

Trekkie Tried and True

December 20, 2009 at 8:57 AM (hair, just for fun, my babies)

I finally saw the new Star Trek yesterday!! It was pretty cool watching the characters from the Star Trek I watched in the ’70 come together. I kept saying, oh that’s so-and-so before they let you know who it was. Sk8er Boi just sat and watched. He enjoyed the movie but it might have been more fun to watch with a true Trekkie.

In a totally unrelated conversation earlier in the day I had to explain The Guy in the Red Shirt to him. Then it was proven again in the scene on the Romulan drill when Kirk, Sulu and Pitts (in a red jump suit) landed and Pitts immediately got sucked into the drill. I said, “there you go, The Guy in the Red Shirt!” Sk8er Boi just grunted. I guess it’s one of those had-to-be-there things.

Sometimes Sk8er Boi’s…I don’t know…thought processes irritate me. Sk8er Boi is by no means a stupid man but he said that the guy who played Scotty was the same guy that played Declan in The Rundown simply because he said the word “dodgy,” a term Declan also uses. I could have told you they weren’t simply by looking but I didn’t argue. I don’t get it, one word and they are the same actor???

Color Gems:
After reading KeenKitty‘s post about Color Gems, I almost got some yesterday. I’ve used it before and, yes, it is incredibly easy. But then I asked the woman at Sally’s how long it lasts and she said 6-10 washes and I remembered how it faded quickly on my hair. I remembered only liking the colour it imparted until after about the second wash. Henna may be a PITA, Color Gems may be easier to get my hands on but I’d have to do Color Gems every couple of weeks to keep the colour close to what I wanted. I’d probably spend more time and money (or at least the same amount) as I do with henna. But the color I get with henna is permanent, once it’s there, I only have to worry about touching up my roots.

I’m not ready for a permanent chemical dye–which will also fade. I came home from Sally’s, mixed up some henna and did a root treatment over night.

The kitties:
No luck finding cat traps or any other signs or where the cats might be going. I need to get a look in that neighbor’s back yard sometime when they are not home. I just have a feeling about them.

Sk8er Boi and I were out front yesterday and Mama came running across the street to us from that yard. It so scared me!!!! I’m afraid of loosing her too. Poor thing, she’s all alone now save the little black one and she doesn’t like him….

I talked the Mr. M, the guy on the other side of the alley who also feeds them, and he said his regulars are disappearing too. He has no clue where they are going either.

I called Animal Control and they said that A) they are not trapping cats in my area and B) that if the neighbor is, he has a legal right to because “my” cats have violated the leash law and are on his property. He did say “humane traps” but with the injured paws, I know in my gut that whatever is happening to them in not humane!!! I didn’t ask him about inhumane traps, the guy I was talking to didn’t seem terribly sympathetic that I was missing four cats. It was like, well if you’d kept control of your cats…..

What’s with the wierd clothes layering

November 10, 2009 at 8:45 AM (books, hair, just for fun, work)

I guess the fashion this year is short sleeves over long but I think it looks weird. The news anchor lady was wearing a lavender short sleeved dress over a longs sleeved dark purple top today. It was just odd looking. To me it looked like she forgot to take her pajama top off before she put on her dress.

Some people take it too far though. The other day I saw a lady wearing this top over a top like this except hers didn’t have an elastic waist so the bottom of the underneath shirt bunched up and stuck out. This woman thought she was high class: expensive shoes, perfectly applied make-up, “expertly” frosted, cut and styled blond hair. And yet she chose to put those two tops together. I just don’t get it.

Hair:
I cut it today. I did it myself and cut about 2.5″ off. It’s still wet or I’d take pics but it feels good. I didn’t measure before I cut but I measured the cut ends and then measured after I was done. I’m solidly at 27.5″ so I guess I finally made it to 30″ before I made any changes.

I’ll get pics later.

I decided to start with small changes. Like Amoretti, I was not enjoying my hair down. Maybe this slightly shorter length will be enough.

I was thinking about layers again but I just don’t know. I’ve never liked them before. But I was thinking that if I only layer the top 2/3rds I might like it better. I might need to go a lot shorter before the curl starts to come back. I’m not ready for that yet.

Oh, and I hennaed over the weekend.

Ebook:
I finally got the correct USB cord from the seller the day after the deadline I gave her. I did get an email from her that she’d mailed it on the day she said she was going to so I gave her the leeway.

With the USB cord, I found I can use a different program than Librarian to add my already purchased ebooks. They go straight on the book in Word form so no mucking about with a second conversion. Works great and looks just like I did when I saved the Word file. It’ nice.

This program is free too. Librarian gave me a free two week trial but then I was going to have to pay for it. I just uninstalled it .

Work:
I talked to the guy yesterday and he still hadn’t gotten the information for me. He is leaving today for a 16 day work trip. I gave him an envelope to put the info is an drop it off since I’m off today. I’m not sure how much hope I have that he will actually do it. Then again, he was the one who brought up the subject up to me this time so maybe he will.

Updates and observations

October 2, 2009 at 7:33 PM (dear step daughters, family, hair, just for fun)

The phone stuff:
The phone store where J lives never called me back so we made a plan with J to go to the store, call me when she got there and hand the phone to the store manager so I could throw a fit at him.

The next day, I texted J to ask if she was going and she wrote back: “I’ll try. I have stuff to do for school. I’m a busy girl” If she’d stopped at the stuff for school part, I’d have been fine with that but the “I’m a busy girl” part grated. It felt like she was saying that what she had to do was far more important that anything I might have to do.

She confirmed that attitude the next day when she was actually going to the store. She texted me before I was even scheduled to be off work to say she was on her way. I texted back that I was going to be stuck late at work but it shouldn’t be more than 20 min. She texted “well I have to go now.” Um, excuse me? I just texted “well, I can’t talk now.”

Whilst I was trying to get the stuff done that I needed to so I could leave, she texted twice and called once. I ignored them all.

When I finally got a chance to call her, she’d already talked to the sales person who told her they were not an authorized AT&T dealer and therefore could not exchange her phone. This after the person on the phone Monday actually put me on hold the check and then assured me that she could exchange it there.

So back the the customer service line where I have had oh so much success so far. I have to say that after I got transferred to the correct department, the lady there fell all over herself apologizing for troubles I hadn’t even explained to her and gave me the phone J wanted without me having to pay anything more than I already had. And she shipped the phone without requiring that they receive J’s phone back.

J should have the phone today. Maybe now we can be done with the whole flippin’ thing!!!!

The DsDs in general:
B, for sure, will be here on the 10th. J still hasn’t made up her mind if she is coming. This made it so that Sk8er Boi has to drive there to go get her/them because it would be cheaper than flying. If we’d been able to book the flight(s) further in advance, they would have been much less expensive.

I hope she doesn’t come. With all this phone drama so fresh in my memory, I’m not sure I will be able to keep from just letting her have it!!!

And Sk8er Boi is talking about going down there for J’s birthday. UGH!! I hope I can talk him out of it.

Hair:
No less than three people who’s blog I read regularly have cut recently. With as much as I think about cutting my own, I have one thing to say: PEOPLE, YOU ARE NOT HELPING!!! I want to get to at least 30″ before I cut. Don’t ask me why.

I think something Rain’s hairdresser friend said makes a lot of sense to me too. She said:
‘a lot of people think that because they’re growing out a short cut and don’t get it shaped to fit the new length.” I’ve tried with the front “layers” but that’s just not working for me. It all goes up when I put it up anyway so the only difference is that I now have the shorter pieces coming loose and sticking out of my braid.

The problem is that I wouldn’t know where to begin to tell a stylist how to shape it. Layers, thus far, have been no good for me because from my nape to about one third up is straight but everything up from there has wave/curl so when it’s layered, that straight hair sticks out from the bottom like a sore thumb.

Besides, I don’t know who I can trust not to take too much off anymore. The stylist I went to for five years use to do OK. She always took off just a little more than I asked but up until this last time it was never more that 1/4 of an inch. This time it was a whole inch more!!!

Her DH dispatches at Sk8er Boi’s work and I’m sue he harbors some not nice feelings for Sk8er Boi the same way Sk8er Boi does for him. He has caused trouble for Sk8er Boi recently. I don’t know how much her DH’s feelings about mine would affect how she cuts my hair but, after last time, I’m not willing to chance it again.

Some interesting (to me) observations:
Ever since I stopped using antiperspirant, I have to be more diligent about using deodorant. When I am not, only my right pit will smells, never my left….

For about five years now I have been unhappy with every razor I’ve tried. I never could get a close shave. I mean literally I could feel stubble as I rinsed the shaving cream off my legs.

That was until one day when, on a whim, I picked up the disposable Soleil razor I’d placed in the shower for B. OMG I was back to getting a reasonably close shave. The difference: three blades instead of five. So for me, more blades does not equal a closer shave!!!

Birthday:
was uneventful. We had a tolerable dinner with my parents the weekend before. They were on their best behavior I guess.

ETA:
I just got a friends request on Facebook from HB’s new fiancé. UGH!!

I forgot to mention

July 22, 2009 at 9:55 PM (elbow, just for fun)

I came across this thread when I was looking for something else. About the same time I pulled out a clean wash cloth and and watched water run off it like it was water proof before it actually started soaking it up.

If you read post #13, it talks about the effect fabric softeners have on towels. I don’t use liquid softener but I used to. I still use dryer sheets. So I’ve been doing this to every towel in the house. The white vinegar didn’t do it so three loads of towels soaked in Epsom salts for about 8 hours each and I’m done with all but “extra” towels we have stuffed in a bag in the closet. We obviously never use them but keep them in case.

On a side note, I received an email not too long ago about the effect of dryer sheets on lint traps. It said a film from the dryer sheets builds up on them and burns out the heating unit. Well, I checked it out and it’s true. I also tested my lint trap and, sure enough, it held water. Just thought I’d pass it on.

Elbow:
There was some mix-up with my elbow brace. A week and a half later, it hasn’t even been ordered yet. Rehab called me today to ask if I’d received it. Um, no, it’s supposed to be shipped to Rehab and I’m supposed to get it from there and try it on in the presence of the therapist to make sure it fits and is doing what it’s supposed to.

Anyway, long story short, the place they ordered it from received the request but never got some authorization they needed. It’s been sitting in their system since the 13th. When Rehab called to check on them today, they said, “Oh, here it is. I’ll send it through now. We should have an authorization in about 20 min.”

20 min

But really I’m not complaining. It’s gotten me out of going back to work that much longer….

Everyting went fine

May 5, 2009 at 7:15 PM (elbow, health, just for fun, skin, work)

Which is what I expected. I have no idea what the butterflies were about. Maybe just that I was excited about getting that bloody cast off. Now I really need to go see Dr. B. Without the cast I really feel how much it was screwing up my neck.

The elbow is sore. I can’t straighten or bend it all the way. I was working at getting it to do both last night and I probably took it too fast. This morning it’s stiff and more sore than yesterday.

Sk8er Boi says the bruising is a lot better than it was last Wed. He went with me to the doc that day and he got a better view of it than I did. He said I was purple.

I stopped by work on my way home yesterday and PM, who had the same procedure a few years ago, made a comment about how the doc “really butchered” my elbow. I really didn’t appreciate that. She went to a different doc and her scar is about half the length mine is. obviously every doc does things a little different and each case is different so . That’s just not something you say to a person!

I’m still having some nausea. I think it’s my body’s way of telling me to freaking slow down. I’m not a sit around and do nothing kind of person but I really need to so it can heal. I went to the doc yesterday then when to the mall–which is the closest Qdoba–ate lunch and had intended to walk around the mall just to be out of the house for a while but I started to go into the mall and thought I really don’t have the energy for this right now. I just wanted to be at home.

I’m going to walk the dog and go to the store for a few groceries and that’s it today.

Skin:
My skin has finally calmed down. Then again, I’m washing my face more regularly now.

Health:
Something is different. 70˚ weather used to be a bit on the cool side for me. Now it almost seems too warm. I’m going outside without a jacket when it’s in the 60′s and am not cold. It used to be that I would be freezing.

I haven’t heard from the doc about my blood tests yet. I don’t think I’m in pre-menopause but I don’t know. Usually, I get something in the mail telling me I’m fine or whatever. I need to call the office today and find out if they’ve even gotten the results.

Emoticons:
I was looking for an emoticon yesterday. I didn’t find what I wanted but I did find some cute ones. I really like this one. See if you can read his lips…

This one was someone’s avatar on another community. I followed a link that led to a link…. I don’t remember the site or I would give that person credit. It takes a few minutes to see it all but I thought it was funny.

Fuzzy ones:
There are about 10 feral cats that run around my neighborhood. 3 or 4 of them are what kissedbyfyre calls tuxedos. We believe they are somehow related to Oreo.

Anyway, they don’t normally let us near them but last night one of them just sat there with an I don’t care attitude.

Here he is just outside the metal shed they shelter in (clickable as usual)

And a little grey long-hair poked her head out to see what was going on but didn’t venture any further than that

I almost forgot

May 1, 2009 at 7:55 AM (just for fun)

We almost had a new addition to the house yesterday.

Sk8er Boi and some coworkers were having lunch at Sonic and one of them saw something in the bushes next to the parking lot. He hunkered down and out bounded this little guy:

He was obviously somebody’s baby because he is fixed (and probably de-scented). I can’t imagine how he got out there.

Anyway, I’ve had ferrets in the past but Sk8er Boi has not. They had a lot of time to play with him and Sk8er Boi got a good taste of what a ferret is like. He had a blast!

Thankfully, the guy who found him was able to take him. If he had not we would have but we really don’t have the extra funds.

Maybe someday…
